We’re extreme. So, saving money on food while traveling (or not traveling for that matter) is a task we take very seriously.
As we've researched, prepared for, and done some travel, we've come up with some tips, tricks and hacks to make long term, light weight traveling possible. Here's a tip that will make things a bit easier.
We’ve been of the belief that flying is the best way to travel. The ads have told us so since well before we were born. Our parents lived in the golden years of flying and we live in the inexpensive, easily accessible age of flying.
*We won’t ever feel like we’ve ‘made it’, and that may in fact be why we've made it?!
The Pareto Principle, also known as the 80/20 rule originates from Italian economist Vilfredo Pareto. The principle states that “for many events, roughly 80% of the effects come from 20% of the causes”
On our walk this morning, a woman was coming towards us with a big city look on her face, no emotion and a wall between her and anyone else on the walkway. We smiled a big small town smile and said hello. It was amazing
Minimal travel means that we need to constantly reevaluate what we’re packing. We constantly ask ourselves if we really need something? Can we find it where we’re going? And is it worth the space and weight in our carryon backpack? So, we’re at it again. And, yes, here is another update on getting rid of our stuff. After much time preparing and planning, the time to take off on a jet plane is finally here! We’re absolutely thrilled, overwhelmingly excited and a bit nervous about having plane tickets in our hands, figuratively of course, as they’re e-tickets.
Our biggest variable in our timeline for leaving the country, in our mind, has always been selling our car.
Everything we have with us is well thought-out, essential and preferably multi-purpose. Now, considering how important shoes are, and since most of your waking moments are spent in them, it’s no surprise that a lot of thought went into picking the right shoes for this trip.
Some things went as planned, some did not...
We paired down our ‘keep and store’ belongings so well that we ended up keeping things we never thought we would.
We sold, donated or discarded 95% of our belongings and stored the rest. We turned in our apartment keys and drove off with a backpack for each of us. We have no apartment and no home-base. We are tied to nothing but each other.
We're embarking on a huge and significant traveling adventure. As we begin to think what this year around Europe will look like we have many things to consider. Here is what is currently on our mind...
Our first step in getting ready to leave for our European travel adventure is to get rid of our stuff. We'll sell, donate or discard almost everything we have. We plan to keep somewhere in the ballpark of 6-12 boxes that we’ll store at a parent’s house.
We live our lives with the goal of being better than average. Well, honestly, not just better than average, but within the 90th percentile*. What does this mean?
